Summary: The position of Operations Manager (OM) is one of the most crucial jobs at the branch therefore failing or falling-short in any of these responsibilities has the most negative impact on branch performance.

Responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities involved within the yard, warehouse, trucking, maintenance area and retail store at Hayward Lumber Co. by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for providing operational leadership and developing staff performance in a fast-paced yard and store
  • Must be able to create a 15-30-45-60 day plan and maintain/update weekly
  • Ability to learn and maximize understanding and utilization of the computerized inventory control system SXe.  This requires becoming totally familiar with the system’s capabilities, operating documentation and reporting functions as well as learning how to read reports necessary to perform job. (SXe training will be provided)
  • Must learn and understand the range of products carried in inventory, including but not limited to Simpson, Feeney, composite decking and EWP which may include learning the RARR process and down stock reports.
  • Able to process special orders and company PO’s also able to understand price matrix and create price record
  • Must have well-developed problem solving abilities for operations manager to succeed in dispatching, receiving, inventory control
  • Unconditional commitment to accurate material load on each delivery truck, before leaving the yard
  • Solid knowledge and management of inventory control (ICC) and logistics
  • OM is accountable for the daily operations of the yard including the driver loads, yard load builders, millworkers and dispatch as well as perform management duties inside the store as management staffing needs require
  • Retail store responsibility include but not limited to; processing transactions using cash-register, cash balancing at end of day
  • Must be able to manage 5-15 employees, and occasionally oversee store employees as management staffing needs require
  • At times, OM may have to pitch-in and select orders and if need be make deliveries
  • OM has to be able to define work processes, schedules and workflow for all yard personnel
  • Uphold and implement policies and procedures
  • Supervise and schedule fleet/vehicle maintenance
  • Work with other such as sellers and managers as a team to ensure coordination of activities
  • Direct, train, coach and mentor employees which may include employee write-ups
  • Review personnel on performance, identify skills and reinforce procedure processes
  • Make sure safety procedures and work areas are well maintained to safeguard employees and visitors
  • Uphold all OSHA/Health and Safety standards set forth by company
  • Open and responsive to change.
  • Personally provides customers with knowledgeable, courteous, and prompt service at all times.
  • Supervises employees involved in one or any combination of the following functions:  dispatching, truck drivers, warehousing, order filling, load building, loading, delivery, and housekeeping.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Recommends disciplinary action when necessary, and administers formal written warnings.
  • Administers location maintenance and repair programs for buildings and property, equipment, and vehicles.
  • May coordinate the location's loss control activities such as fire, theft, safety, and fleet safety qualification and training.
  • Able to perform activities of workers' supervised.
  • Develops work assignments.
  • Maintains time and production records.
  • Approves vacation schedules and time off sheets.
  • Coordinates staffing according to sales orders or fill orders, which including sending employees home or laying them off when no work is available to be performed.
  • Becomes involved in purchasing activities.
  • Is responsible for inventory cycle counts (ICC).
  • Confers with yard/warehouse personnel to plan and allocate use of materials handling equipment such as forklifts, saws and trucks.
  • Interprets company policies to workers; adheres to Hayward’s safety standards and enforces safety regulations.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
  • Ensures all orders are put together in a timely manner, and that special orders are received and shipped properly.
  • Operates machinery as required; operates forklift and flat-bed trucks.
  • May supervise the contractor sales counter and/or act as direct dispatcher.
  • Ensures yard and warehouse are safe working areas, and are kept neat and orderly.
  • Is actively involved in recruiting, hiring, employee orientation, training, and disciplining employees under his/her direction.

Total employees supervised anywhere from 1 to 25 employees.  Branch management staffing needs may require overseeing store employees and sales reps.

Operations Manager has supervisory/lead responsibilities, the following will apply to your supervisory role (this is an overview; other supervisory responsibilities may be added).

Qualification Requirements: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability preferred. 

  • Education and/or Experience -- College degree with three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have supervisory experience and knowledge of the building materials industry.
  • Language Skills -- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, safety and governmental regulations, and technical procedures. Ability to write business correspondence and develop reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to employees, supervisors, and customers.
  • Mathematical Skills -- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratios, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Certificates and Licenses --  Class C License is acceptable, a DOT qualified candidate with a "Class A" Commercial Drivers license (CDL) is desirable.  Must be a certified forklift operator.
